A mob beat a man to death alleging that he was a cattle thief in Rawtara village of Sadar upazila in Magura early yesterday.
The deceased -- Kabir Hossain, 37, son of Abul Kashem -- was from Arukandi village in Jhenidah.
Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ilias Hossain said Kabir went to a house in Rawtara area, around five kilometres off his house, on Thursday night.
“Give me the key of your cowshed,” house owner Lutfor Rahman quoted Kabir as saying while talking to The Daily Star.
Lutfor shouted, “thief, theif!”.
Hearing his scream, locals rushed to the spot and started beating Kabir, leaving him dead on the spot, said the OC.
Kabir was suffering from mental disorder and was undergoing treatment, said Kabir's brother Miraz Hossain.
He had been kept in a locked room as he used to disappear often, Miraz added.
On Thursday, he managed to escape, he further said.
Hiron, a relative of Kabir, said the allegation against Kabir is totally false. They will go for legal action over Kabir's death.
OC Ilias Hossain said they are investigating the matter.
